Exercise: Map Reading
and Air Photo Interpretation

Read "The Essentials of Geography" in TPE (the Web text) paying particular attention to the section "Tools of the Geographer"

1. Go to Microsoft's TerraServer database of air photographs.

  • In the upper left hand corner of the TerraServer home page you'll find a search box called "Search TerraServer". Type "Stevens Point, WI" (without quotes). At the next screen of choices, choose the "Stevens Point Airport" air photo taken on 5/5/92.

  • Find the airport at the bottom of the Stevens Point air photo  (cross-like feature). Click once at the intersection of the runways to zoom in on the photo.

  • Measure the length of the longest runway that runs southwest - northeast by using the scale at the bottom of the photo to determine the approximate real world distance in miles.
